RF comms in outback Aus
If you can't afford a satphone then there's HF units; otherwise, Telstra's 'blue tick' mobile phones, esp those with an external antenna link.
In which case it helps to know where the base stations are so here's a guide:

Also covers UHF repeater stations.
(And now we have 80 channels in UHF, wouldn't it be good to have legal 10w handsets?!! )Cheers, Ern
