Rod, I'll kick it off for you.

Do you and your wife like steak? If yes it is worth a visit to this place which is regarded as the world's worst vegetarian restaurant.

On a Saturday night - be early - booking is a good idea and bring a good appetite.

Oh Bob! ....You are not doing my waste line any good at all. That restaurant looks really good. My wife is not a big eater but maybe I could starve her for a couple of days so we can both pigout. Thanks for the heads up. I will put them on the list.
That Tony Robertson, on the TV, did a program on Brissy where he went to the building that MacArthur occupied when he won the war.(Well thats the way he would like us to remember him) It looked very interesting

MacArthur Chambers is very easy to find - is is not in the mall but just at the Fortitude Valley end of the mall - not sure about the museum I have heard of, re opening times/days etc. The only problem you may have [you mentioned that your wife had not been 100%] might be parking. There is parking under King George square which is only approx a block away from the chambers - not sure of the charges these days. The only place to not park [unless you have a kidney for sale] is at the Myer centre which is towards the upper end of the mall.

Perhaps another few ideas - Mt Coot-tha at night - on a clear night you get a great view of Brisbane and an idea of how large the place really is. Mt Gravatt is not bad either. A"cheapish" tour of the city is available on a City Cat ferry - Routes are available on the net and you could always say that you have now taken your wife on a cruise. If you are into museums, the Queensland museum at South Bank - over the river bridge from the top end of the mall is very good - you would need to check times etc. You can get a good feed under Post Office square at a reasonable cost, the walk up the stairs and sit in the open air to eat it. The eternal flame of Rememberance is an icon of the city - unknown to most people - at the far ends of the wall under the flame of Remembrance is a small museum and area of reflection. The Brisbane City Hall has just been refurbished and I believe that the old Shingle Inn [another city coffee and cake icon] has been located there - the organ is a classic and I believe that they are starting organ concerts open to the public. Not sure if all of the City Hall stuff is open yet but it is worth a look.

With regards the world's worst vegetarian restaurant - my only criticism of the place would be - it is the only place in the world I don't get the balance of my wife's steak - she is not normally a big eater of steak so I can usually count on some of her's as I can cheerfully eat an entire meal of steak and steak only.

Thanks for the ideas Bob. We were looking today a a map and decided to stay Thursday night in Ipswich then while fresh from a nights sleep make an assault on the traffic and go to the show and park near by. (To be able to have short walk with arm fulls of goodies.) We are driving a deisel 60 Series Landcruiser. Its not the most nimble of vehicles for traffic (but it can carry lots of goodies)
We looked too at motels close to the city centre, but a lot were high rise with parking underneath. The designers of the buildings never catered for Landcruiser wagons in their car parks.
If the run to the city is easy from Ipswich we may stay at that a motel for a few days and commute to the centre for looking about.
That river cruise is something that I saw on the net when I first started to look at things to do. I grew up in Sydney and then settled here 37 years ago and married a local girl. Neither of us like big cities and crowds for that matter. we haven't been to a big museum for ages so i think that will be high on our "must see". The night lights will interest her because she has just bought a new Digi camera and she is breaking her neck to try it out.
