Alox Wheel

I picked up a second hand bench grinder at a garage sale on the weekend and I'm a bit curious about one of the wheels on it.

The grinder is an old 6" Bergin model. One of the wheels currently on it is an 80 grit Aluminium Oxide wheel that is a red/brown color. It is marked with FHP Japan as the brand and other than grit size it has no other markings on it. Does anyone know what it would be and if it would be any good for grinding chisel/plane blades?

Also I want to fit a White Alox wheel to it. Problem is it takes 150mm*20mm wheels. All the 6" wheels I have seen have been 25mm.

Does anyone know anywhere I can get a 20mm wide wheel in OZ??

You can try http://www.atomsupply.com.au/. I have seen a variety of 150mm ALOX grinding wheels from their catalogue but not so sure about 20mm.

Thanks for that. I just had a look through their catalogue and they do have a 13mm thick white wheel so if I can't find a 20mm one that is an option.

On the weekend I acquired an 8" Abbott & Ashby bench grinder 1990 model that has been in a box since new an used only a couple of times. The problem was that the eye protection guards and toll rests for the grinder had been removd from the box over the years.

I contacted Hare & Forbes in Parramatta as they sell A&A grinders and was given the contact of JW Ross as a source of parts. Their website is http://www.jwross.com.au/

Like winning the lottery. If you go to Catalogue and enter Abbott and Ashby it will bring up the full product listing. As a sample P1 - P4 covers belts, discs and buffing mops etc and specifically P3- tapers and parallel extensions, P5- Eyeshields and tool rests They have a broad network of distrubutors, one of which I used for over 15 years, and crazy as it may seem I wasn't aware of JW Ross as a supplier to them. Learn something every day.

Their 150mm wheels sem to all be 25mm wide.

As a source this information may be of use to others and no I don't own shares in the company.
