Default What bench grinder aftermarket toolrest?

    Hello all,
I asked this q in another sub but to no avail.
Thought here might be more appropriate.
I have a bench grinder in need of company in the form of a tool rest.
I have seen the Veritas one on the Carbetec site.
Does anyone own one? is good value or are there similar suitable ones out there.
I want it to sreate bevels on plane blades

There is a generic type available at Carbatec & similar that is good too. Fit & finish aren't as good as the Veritas one but it does the job OK for me.

    Usually priced somewhere $25-40

I have the Veritas one. Quick, simple to use. Easy to install. Worth the money.

Leonard lee describes the one I built. It is in the Taunton Press "Sharpening" book. Seems very much like the Veritas one and cost me nothing, except about 10 minutes and some scraps. Hope this helps.

I have both the basic carbatec and the timbecon versions (they are basically the same) on my 8" and 10" grinders and they are OK. I was recently given another 8" grinder and for this one I intend to make my own.

Here is a photo of my set-up. I use the basic carbatec/timbecon jig - seems to work fine, although you need to spend a bit of time making sure it is all square to the wheel. I'd also reccommend buying a tormek angle gauge, as setting the angles of 25 or 30 can be challenging.

    Cheers,

    Tom

Good one James .Nice wide surface to work on.
I have the generic one that Carbatec sells .
I use it in conjunction with the mitre gauge for grinding the primary bevel on plane blades and find that on the wider blades the the mitre gauge drops off the edge of the table .

On my list of things that need doing is a modification of the table of the rest.
