    Default bench grinders

Is it possible to fit 8 inch CBN wheels to a 6 inch grinder without causing problems.

Because of the higher load needed to start and keep the larger wheels turning, long term you are likely to burn the grinder out.
Short term you won't be able to apply anywhere near the pressure onto the wheel, that you would be able to with the 8" grinder, and not slow the wheels down. This will also cause overheating and damage.

All in all not a good idea.

I'm sure you could get it to fit and spin but Bob's is right. I doubt it would be a wise idea.

Are you fitting the wheel to a good little 6 inch grinder with minimal vibration or is it just the grinder you have on hand?

8" grinders are not that expensive and even the cheap ones are mostly pretty decent. I have a GMC from bunnies that I picked up for about $90 and it's fine. I can't pick up any noticeable vibration. Keep you receipt, test it with the wheels on and off for vibration. Put your cbn wheels on it and power it up. If the vibration is within your limits keep it! If not, bunnies will take it back with a smile.

    There is another problem.

    The 6" grinder has a 1/2" shaft and the 8" a 5/8" shaft.

CBN wheels and their bushes are machined to fit perfectly to these shaft sizes to maintain their balance.

If you have a 6" grinder why not use 6" wheels?

There is not a lot of difference.

On a side note, I just googled it. From what I have read the cbn wheels are a fair bit heavier. I have used an underpowered bench grinder in the past and it is quite frustrating. I think the 6inch would struggle with the extra weight.
