Out of the box plane
As I'm finalising my order for my new LV low angle BU Jack plane plus the extra blades, it got me thinking of how to get it ready to use when it arrives.
Apparently the LV blades are flat when new and all is needed is a polish with a 6000 waterstone. (LV sales rep)
How long is required to polish the blade on the stone?
Do you go straight from polishing to sharpening?
Is there need for a grinder if I'm happy with the primary bevel?
Thanks for your help
Andy

Congratulations. It is a very nice plane. When I got mine it was sharp and ready to use straight from the box. Polishing the blade might have been useful, but with my experience at the time I doubt I could have improved anything.
You probably need a dozen or so strokes.
It is very unlikely that you will need any further sharpening on a new LV blade.
Not immediately, but it might become useful in the future.
I strongly recommend getting a honing guide. They are very useful if you do not have much experience in sharpening and, some would argue, are essential for BU planes.Last edited by Groggy; 9th October 2010 at 08:27 PM. Reason: fix quote

Thanks for the reply.
I actually have a honing guide, one of those $12 ones from carbatec. I actually just saw Daneb Puchalski (LN demonstrator) use the same one.
I usually just find the primary, raise it slightly (on the 1200) then do the same on the 6000 but raise it slightly more.
