    Default CBN setup?

Since funds are tight, I'm considering foregoing the new Tormek T-8 kit and instead adapting my existing Carbatec slow-speed grinder with a CBN wheel and Tormek bits (as others seem to have done). Application is putting new hollow ground primary bevels on chisels and plane blades - I already have the Woodcut jig for turning tools. I then go to a Veritas honing guide and a couple of ceramic stones to form a microbevel.

Bits required to do this would be:

Tormek SE-77 straight blade holder (new version of SE-76, allows slight cambering on plane blades)
    Angle Master
    Tormek bench grinder mounting kit
    180 grit CBN wheel

It looks as though the Tormek rail will sit over the top of the existing Woodcut jig, allowing the two to share a wheel?

Total cost of the above comes to under $500 (depending on which CBN wheel I use), vs. >$1200 for the full Tormek T-8.

The Carbatec bench grinder has a 5/8" shaft, so I'm looking at the CBN wheels from CWS. Seems I have a choice between the 8" x 25mm wide or 40mm wide - any particular reasons to choose one over the other, and does the Carbatec slow speed grinder have a long enough shaft to take the 40mm wheel? Is anyone already successfully using this combo?

Any other tricks for young players with this setup? I realise that the Tormek bench grinder mounting kit will have to be set up spot on relative to the CBN wheel (since it cannot be dressed!), and am considering building in some fine adjustment to the way I mount this.

    Cheers

Mr B, I have a similar set up, which you can read about here. Other choices are mentioned as well.

Thanks Derek - that's exactly what I had in mind. Clearly the 1" CBN wheel fits your grinder OK (I have the same one), but I don't know if the 40mm wide wheel is also wider at the central "boss" that goes on the shaft. No reason for it to be wider I guess, but if that portion takes up 40mm on the shaft I doubt there will be enough thread showing to get the nut on.

With the guards removed, I assume there's no other restriction on the width of the CBN wheel?

I might have to give CWS a call to check dimensions on the 40mm wide version (and find out whether they have stock of any of these....). I might be in for a bit of a wait until they get some in.

    Cheers

Cheers GlennD - very timely. I'll give them a call in the morning and see which flavours they now have in stock. Needs to be 8", 180 grit, to fit 5/8" shaft, but I might just have to go with whatever width they have. From what Derek has found with his setup the 1" wheel seems to do the job just fine, but I'll still ask about the 40mm version.

I Have the 8 inch 40mm wheel and vicmarc grinder set up , drove to Villawood , western Sydney to pick up, 180 grit, there may be savings from other sources and other suppliers but compared to Tormek set up its still cheap. the grinder is so true it appears not to be turning at 1750 rpm, easy to install,, i combined with the veritas tool rest, functional, but tormek tool rests may have other features, glad i waited or procrastinated for this sharpening system to arrive ,cant beat it, also flattening the back of chisels and plane irons on the side of the wheel is a bonus , honing off the grinding scratches shows that the backs are truly flat off the wheel, Rossco

Thanks woodsurfer - it looks as though CWS have the 8" x 1" wide 180 grit in the Woodcut CBN wheel in stock, but not the 40mm Woodcut one. On the other hand, they do have the Vicmarc 40mm version, so maybe they prefer to stock these? Slightly more expensive; about an extra $50 when you include the 5/8" bush required for my grinder. I'll check with them that the Vicmarc one will leave enough of the grinder shaft thread to get the nut on, as it looks like a fairly meaty lump of metal !

    Cheers

Mr Brush, the CBN wheels are not even thickness discs ,the grinding face , edge and body of the disc form a three sided u shape, the wheel is fairly thin at the grinder shaft, cant find the words to express it better, you may already know this, but your grinder shaft thread length shouldnt be a problem, Rossco ps bought mine at Timberbits, good store and service

That is exactly what I did. You do have to be careful as not all CBN wheels fit the Carbatec slow grind, but I too got mine from Jim.

Can't show you the photo of my set-up as I have just pulled it apart to mount on my new travelling trolley that wont be finished for a while.

I'll certainly check before buying that the particular CBN wheel will fit. First job is to pull the guards and existing wheels off my grinder to get a better look at what I have to work with.

Thanks to all for your responses and assistance. I'll go the 40mm wide 180 grit wheel if it will fit the grinder - looking forward to being able to form new primary bevels without loads of laborious work on coarse stones that never stay flat for long !
