    Default chisel sharpening guide - setout for degree of bevel

    I purchased a basic 2 in 1 Chisel sharpening guide to begin learning how to sharpen my own chisels and hand plane blades and was wondering if anyone knows the distances that a chisel bevel is setout from the guide for various degree sharpening?

    I believe that there is such a rule of thumb measurements as opposed to guesstimating by eye the bevel degree.

    Regards
    Mike

    G'day Mike,

    I believe what you're looking for is a consistent way of extending the blade from the front of the honing guide.

    If you want the "perfect" angle, then you can check out this post, https://www.woodworkforums.com/f127/ultimate-setting-honing-guide-82482

    This is another good read, http://blog.woodworking-magazine.com...ng+Angles.aspx

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers

    Default

    SinX = O x H

    Or, re-arranged: H = SinX/O

    Where: H = amount of tool steel hanging out of the guide
    O = height of Guide from pivot to tool steel (measured perpendicular to tool)
    X = desired bevel angle.

    Simple!
    I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.
