Default How to clean a loaded coarse (120 grit) shapton ceramic stone?

I would be grateful for some tips on how to clean a loaded Shapton 120 grit ceramic stone. One side is OK but the other has a glazed quality . I looked around on the net but surprisingly I didn't find much on cleaning loaded ceramic stones.

    Thanks

Are you able to flatten it? I use a nanohone lapping plate but a diamond lapping plate or even sandpaper on a piece of float glass or similar would work.

Hi , Yes I have a DMT diamond 600/320 grit. maybe I need something a little coarser? Or patience . It definitely raises slurry but does not appear to be affecting the loading .

    some observations ...

the Shapton 120 can be used as either an oil stone or a water stone -- at least that is what the packaging says.
were you using oil or water to carry the swarf away?

or did you use the stone dry? The packaging says you shouldn't use a Shapton stone dry.

I acquired a 120 Shapton about two months ago. It is a very coarse stone. I've been using glass cleaner as a lubricant / swarf lifter.

Cleaning the 120 Shapton is usually done by flattening it using a diamond plate. I suspect that coarse (80 or 120 grit) wet or dry silicon carbide abrasive stuck to a glass plate will also work, but as I have a suitable diamond diamond plate I use that.

To flatten the stone, use the diamond plate, or 80 or 120 grit wet and dry, with plenty of water. I use the kitchen sink and wash the stone residue down the drain.

The side effect of flattening the stone will be getting rid of the glazing.

I have the same 120 grit stone, its got a nice feel to it. If you want to roughen or flatten the stone, diamond stone of similar grit is the way, I manage with a 250 grit stone, it seems to work OK, I also use a sanding cleaning stick if all I want is to remove the "glaze" which is basically loaded with steel swarf. some people say this rust eraser is pretty good.

Use a flat diamond sharpener / plate. Whatever you use to cut and flatten should harder than the stone being cut.
