Default Best stone for chisels and plane blades

Just getting back into woodworking and I need to get my chisels and plane blades sharp.

ive never done my own sharpening but figure it's a good time to learn.

ive bought a guide from Carbatec so my blade angles will be right but I'm not sure what it better to use, oil stone or water stone?

can someone guide me as to the best stone to get to start me off?

    cheers

    Daz.

There are so many sharpening systems around now it would be hard to say what is ''best''. As you are starting out and already have a guide than at the risk of sticking my neck out I would say get a reasonable quality oil stone to start with. Reason I say this you will not have the issue of having to flatten the stone all the time like you would have to do with water stones. If you follow the instructions that come with the guide that should get a reasonable result. Also get some honing paste and make yourself a strop. Some leather glued to a backing board will do. It would take all day to write a how to sharpen on here so look at some youtube sharpening videos. There are thousands out there.
    Regards
    John

I have been using a Norton India oil stone and a aluminium oxide grinding wheel for 40+ years and if I wish can produce a shaving
sharp edge, all you need to do is learn how to use them and practice.

Diamond plates are more expensive than oil stones and despite they claims they wear out

+1 for diamond plates and diamond paste. Yep you could wear them out but it will take a long time if you get Jap sintered diamond plates. When you get them sharp it's only a touch up from there on.

Have you a name or web site for the Japanese sintered stones?

I don't have or use enough wide & straight edges to need anything other than 800 grit and 1500 grit and a cardboard strop on a stone base.

I would buy monocrystalline diamond plates = they are durable and stay flat.
My oil stones and waterstones wear down faster than I expected. However,
that's a wonderful excuse to go shopping.
