Default A 'new' gadget for saw filing

I just got an eBay buy delivered and I am itching to try it out:
    Attachment 187410

This little device attaches to the end of the saw file to show you the rake and fleam that you want while you are filing - you keep the long bar level and parallel to the saw plate and the tooth line and you keep the rake and fleam steady.

    Here are the instructions:

If this works, I reckon that Veritas should make it again.
    Cheers

That's a great find. Let us know if it works, and we'll all lobby Veritas.

I have a long rip to make which I've been putting off pending filing my best rip saw, so I should be able to give a report of early impressions soon
As to age, the instruction paper is quite brittle and darkened so I would put it in the early 20th century but I will do more research and let you know.

Can I send you some blunt saws for practice?

No need, Cliff. I've got plenty of my own
Some research online shows that Henry Briggs was awarded a US Patent for the device in 1919:

I recently sharpened my first saw at the TTTG saw sharpening workshop.
It is now cutting beautifully but I am afraid that I may never be able to replicate the success without TTTG supervision.

Sharpened 3 saws today - 28" 5ppi Tyzack rip, 22" 9ppi S&J xcut, and 14" 12ppi Tyzack tenon (filed xcut). The tool worked very well and made the job appreciably easier, mainly because the file felt easier to keep at the right angles. Best of all, the three saws all cut better now!

I hope someone will pick up the to and re-introduce it to the market. It gives me more confidence in my ability to produce a tolerably sharp saw with minimal effort.

Would it be difficult to make a similar gadget?

It's quite easy to make a block with an angled hole in it to help with fleam. The advance of the Briggs device is holding the file at the same rake - with the block device, the file tends to rotate so it doesn't keep the same rake angle. Maybe a grub screw into the file tip would hold it.

this one still in concept stage
WoodNet Forums: Rake and fleam guides

this one to be released soon.

No doubt others will pop up!

Plenty of home made versions as well.
