    Default Hand Grinder Wheel Advice

I've managed to buy an 8" hand grinder from another forumite. As expected the wheel is quite worn (about 1" missing!), and I'm after a replacement so I can grind my hand tools.

I went to a local abrasives store today, and the sales man, although somewhat knowledgeable, really wasn't interested in helping me because I'm using a hand grinder. He told me that because I'm not spinning the wheel at 3000 rpm, he can't help me.

So now I'm after proper help! I have sigma ceramic stones (1000, 6000, 13000 from Tools from Japan) for the final sharpen, so I'm after bevel grinding and 'ding removal'. Can someone please tell me what I need!

I was previously told 46grit, 38a, k softness or softer, but this was by a guy with a high speed grinder.

    Thanks

You need something 8 inches, round and with grit. be a good idea to get multiple bushes which mst wheels should come with.

Jim davey sells a 3X Norton wheel 46 and 80 grit. I guess you could also import it

The sandpaper man sells a similiar norton but not 3X branded.

    Australian abrasives wheels from CWS

    Mc Jing

    Timbecon

Seems to be no one in South Oz??

also another nuggett of advice from another forumite to me when i asked about a sharpening product was essentially "no i cant advise you". When i thought about this for a while i realised that i needed to work out what suited me best. No doubt you will try a couple of wheels its another one of those sharpening journey things.

One question to think about is also what kind of steel you will be grinding most? O1 or HSS flavour? Some wheels are better than other even at slow speeds.

I'm not missing something here am I...I really just need an 8" wheel. It doesn't change things when I put them on a hand grinder instead of a high speed grinder. The sales man left me confused.

according to Jim: 46 grit for heavy grinding such as establishing a new bevel and 80 grit for putting a working edge on your turning tools or primary edge on your plane blades

I have used an 8" x 46# Norton "3X" on a hand crank for years mounted with Veritas Tool Rest and using the matching Veritas Blade Holders - it is my favourite. Estimated speed is 700rpm. It can still burn the steel if not careful but I use a thumb on the blade as a temperature gauge - let it air cool when too hot for comfort. NEVER dunk in water - the fast cooling with cause micro cracks at the tip resulting in premature edge degrading.
I also have a 2,800rpm electric with white wheel and an 1,100 electric with 80# Norton "3X".

Thank you for your advice Jim. It's good to hear from someone who uses/has used the gear that I'm looking on setting up. I was getting quite frustrated when you go to an abrasives store and get bad advice.

The guy is being a goose for not helping you! Your not missing something mate. I have some old 46grit and 80grit grinder wheels that have been downgraded to hand rubbing axe stones for tip up work out in the field. Also good for machete stones as well.

I think it's a great idea. A softer bond would be better but it works the same just slower. If you find an old bike, modify it to a peddle powered grinder!

Was thinking about this today. Where are you up to with it?

On the anarchist tool chest DVD schwarz recommended the 3 x wheels as well.

I've decided to go with Jim's recommendation. Just have to save up a few more dollars first...gotta both love and hate Christmas!

I might do a WIP when I've got the parts.

I've seen a snippet from chris's DVD on YouTube. Great from what I've seen. I'm planning on making an anarchist tool chest from Tassy Oak...a friend gave me an old entertainment unit...gotta love non-woodworking friends

A quick update: I've bought a 46 grit Norton from Jim Davey, it should arrive tomorrow.

    Default Hand Grinder Wheel Advice

    Here's what I'm up to.

The wheel arrived today, and after removing the tool rest (doesn't quite fit which means I need an after market one) and giving it a good clean in turps, I ended up with this:

The gears are in excellent condition

But after a trial run before painting it to make it look pretty, I ended up with a speed wobble! Here are some pics which I'm hoping are going to be self explanatory.

And the last pic that didn't fit on the last post

There is only 1 aluminium flange that goes 'inside' the centre hole of the wheel, the other side has a large flat washer. Have I got this right?

I've never had a woodwork grinder before. Will the slight wobble disappear after I use a trueing stick?
