More thoughts on jigs.
We can go on ad infinatum about sharpening and the merits of one system versus another
I've been looking at these systems: Woodcut, Nova, Wolverine and Robert Sorby. They are variations on a theme and to me, one is no better that the other. They are all considerably cheaper than Tormek or Jet - even with having to buy a grinder.
Having read Ern's thread on his Frolics In Tormek Land I can see no reason to outlay that amount of money.
True, the wet stones save metal.
True you get a brilliant edge.
But - a friend of mine has the Sorby set-up and his wheel is a rubber wheel that expands with centrifugal force into an abrasive belt that can be made by ones self and changed easily and quickly. It also saves metal and gives a wonderful edge somewhere between the tormek/Jet and the ordinary grinding wheels.
Mike Darlow has plans for angle gauges in one of his books, so that should not be a problem, Or you could by a gauge for one of the wetstone units and use that.
What are your thoughts.???

Yes, the selling point was that it was the only jig that would do a true helical grind.
As for the others, google on Nova Sharpening Centre or whatever it's called. You'll find disparaging comments about build quality on several US forums. Some users sent theirs back for a refund.
Darlow is/was a fan of the linisher style setup. Cool grinding.
As for Tormek, to be fair we have two technologies here: a wet wheel, and a jig system. It does do a very sharp edge.Cheers, Ern
