What I learned yesterday
Ive meant to do it for ages but yesterday I used my loupe to monitor my sharpening process. I bought a couple of $5 carving chisels and wanted to see if they could take an edge. After the usual faffing around I broke out the loupe and a whole new world opened up!
I sharpen by hand and I normally do the shaping on a coarse stone. Well blow me giblets I could see where there was and there wasnt an edge! I then went to the fine stone and blow me down I could see where the bevel was flat and where it was rounded. I then went to the 800 grit and blow me down I could see where there was an edge and where there was a wall. By then I was shaving hairs off my arm. I then went to the strop and blow me down I could shave with the puppie!
Amazing how much easier things are when you can see properly. My wife reckons Im obsessive...."We must never become callous. When we experience the conflicts ever more deeply we are living in truth. The quiet conscience is an invention of the devil." - Albert Schweizer

Good idea.
I break out a pair of 2.5X reading glasses for this kind of thing. Just cheapies from the Chemist but stronger than my normal goggles.
Also something learned from Tormek-world is to colour the bevels with a felt-tip pen when starting in on them. Can tell you a lot about how you're presenting them.Cheers, Ern
