Paring gouges
Hi, I have just bought 5 Buck Bros curved gouges. The largest 11/4 inches is sharpened on the back. The rest are sharpened on the front. I looked on utube and all are shown sharpened on the rear. Which is correct for general use? Thanks

Pictures would help.
Your title says paring gouges and you then say curved gouges?
Buck Made Patternmaking paring gouges and these would normally be sharpened on the front.
Whereas carving gouges are sharpened on the back.
There are exceptions.

Thanks for the reply. Sorry I am a bit unclear. I bought these on Trademe ( NZs ebay) advertised as paring gouges. The shanks are straight but half round if that makes sense.

There are two different types of gouges: in-channel and out-channel, with bevels inside- and outside, respectively.
In-channel are easier for paring, while out-channel are used to create the outside walls of a shoulder.
