    Ern,
Yes by using a .5 mm thick 6" rule along the edge of the stone to rest the blade on achieves approx 1-2 mm of polished micro bevel on the back or flat side. Certainly makes getting a true flat edge and therefore even burr a lot easier.

this might be a silly question, but why do we want a micro bevel on the flat side of the blade? My understanding was that the micro bevel should be on the front.

if you put a micro bevel on the back of the blade do you still put the 30 degree bevel on the front?

    cheers

    Joe,
I am not an experienced sharpener, have a read of the thread by Thumbsucker here re sharpening Derek has just posted some thoughts in the usual clear and concise way.
Quoting from David charlesworth when flatening the back of a blade and removing any factory machining scratches going from 800 grit then 1200 the next step is to polish up to 8000 or greater if keen enough. The purpose of the micro bevel is to save effort and time by getting a highly polished surface at the cutting edge equal to the bevel side which will produce a sharp edge.

BTW this method is not for chisels when a perfectly flat back is the goal.

    Thanks Mike.

Plus it would give a marginally (very!) steeper cutting angle.
    Cheers, Ern
