    Default Scheppach Tiger 2500 advice

    Hi all,
For the use type and price range/value I am thinking I will purchase a Tiger 2500. General chisel, plane, spakeshave, knives etc... No woodturning tools. I notice forum comments in threads and general internet comments about the Tormak dresser being the better tool. I believe it fits as both have 12mm arms. Also the need to check rough running problems, need to check alignment of bar to stone etc.
So along with the boxed unit, I would get the Tormek dresser.
I also saw a handy tip about keeping a magnet in the water reservoir. Makes sense, is it a good thing to do?
Is there anything else to contemplate before I do the deal?
    Cheers
    Peter

    Default Tormek Pro Angle Master

Add the Tormek Pro Angle Master as well to aid setting up your grinding angles; the Sheppach supplied one is a piece of junk.

One thing to add though; I don't think the Tiger comes with a fine adjuster for setting the bar height; this is a PITA. You might want to consider one of the other clones; like Record, Jet and Generic Made In China.

I have the older Tiger 2000 and have fitted it out with Tormek jigs; now saving my pennies to by a $1250 T8. That is a massive increase in price over any of the generics but having seen and (briefly) used one I can see where the quality is. It's like comparing a pre-WW2 Stanley 4 with the abomination now sold at Bunnings; at the end of the day both can be made to take gossamer thin shavings but one of them needs a lot of work beforehand, isn't as easy to adjust and just feels nasty in the hand.
Nothing succeeds like a budgie without a beak.

Good idea re the angle Master. I had read about the sheppachbeing inferior. Cost wise I think I will just have to suck it up with the Bar height adjustment lack thereof. Will check out the other makes you mentioned. Thanks. P.

The record power wg250 looks quite good. Has anybody used one of these?

I have purchased the scheppach 2500 and am quite pleased. A tiny bit of truing was needed. The motor shaft drives a rubber tyre inboard of the honing wheel. This tyre is not perfectly round and some uneven light running noise eventuates. Done some initial sharpening and pleased. The rest on the 2500 does come with a microadjust which is good but there is some movement in the system and care needed for parallel placement of the bar to stone each tine you mucroadjust. Awaiting my tormek angle setter. All things considers it hits my price/value/usage point and thats the important thing. I look foward to many sharp times in years ahead.

If i were to buy again id def go for the Tormek.

    Reasons being:
    - My Schppach 2500 runs a slight elliptical orbit, similar to Petebalf probably needs a shaft alignment. I mostly use it for sharpening my turning tools so its not as big of an issue. If i tried sharpening chisels i end up with skews
    - The wheel quality of ok, but you get what you pay for
    - I'm a weekend warrior, so the grinder probably gets pulled out once a month or more depending on how much turning i'm doing. At this rate the grinder will be with me probably for life, (assuming it doesn't die). IMO The asking price for a Tormek spread over the next 20 years no longer seems like a big deal. Especially knowing you're buying a quality unit once, rather than living with the short comings of the Tiger.
    - By the time you factor in all the accessories you get with the T8 that you'll be buying if you get the Scheppach, makes the price tag of the Tormek much more digestible.
    - The scheppach is noisy, mine squeeks like crazy when in use.
    - Honing wheel is much nicer on Tormek, and so are the accessories.

At the end of the day i got mine because it was on special at the time, figured how bad can it be. Does it work, sure but with some serious quirks. Knowing what i know now i wouldn't buy again.

I think that just about sums up the "Scheppach Experience".....

Speaking as the owner of a Scheppach bandsaw, on which just about every control, lever, or other plastic part has snapped off and had to be replaced with a homemade fix.

I'm always amused to see how heavily they push the "Designed in Germany" aspect, while failing to also mention "*and made as cheaply as possible in China"
