Problem with Shapton Glass stone 8000 Grit
Hi Guys,
My shapton 8000 Grit stone seems to have some metal swarf or shavings embedded into it.
Blades tend to skip/skate over this stone. Or cut very slowly with it.
They are shapton glass stones.
In the photo. They are freshly flattened and I've just put the back of a chisel on the stones to compare the the differences between the stone.
Each time i flatten the 8000 grit stone, it still looks grey
I have the 1000/3000/8000/16000 glass stones. I dont do anything different to each of the stones and I dont have any issues with the other stones.
I am trying to get in contact with the Shapton folks in Japan. But their 'contact' section on their website does not work. There is not a shapton representative in Aus and I can't find one in Usa.
If anyone knows what up, could you let me know. Or have come across something like this before.
thanks in advance.
Regards,
Bernard
Tech Data:
I use hone-rite in the water mixture.
I sharpen Lie Nielsen A2, PMV11, O1 and Vintage metal with these stones
I flatten them with the 300 grit side of my trend diamond stone.
I've checked with a straight edge that the stones are all flat to 0.0015".

I bought my Shapton stones from Lie-Nielsen Australia. Don't know if they still sell them.
I have this exact stone and don't have the issues you are having. I flatten my stones with a DMT flattening plate. I just use plain old water sprayed on with a garden mister. I'd never even heard of Honerite until just now.
Maybe try doing a little more flattening and taking off more than you usually would?
I don't know that this was very informative, but...

I think you could use a Nagura stone to rub against your water stones (with water of course) to form a slurry to clear the small iron filings from the surface of your stones. There should be plenty of videos showing you how to do it.

Hey Mark
Thanks for your comment.
Hone-rite is just used for rust prevention. Nothing too special about it.
I think I've flattened the stones like 10 times thru general use and the 8000g still looks grey
I'll try flatten it like a few more time, when I'm in the shed next
thank you

Hey Justonething,
Thanks for your message
I am not too sure about a Nagura stone. The shapton website states that the glass stones don't need a nagura stone.
I also do not think a Nagura stone would be too effective in my case. Because the stone still looks grey after i have flattened it with a 300g diamond stone.
Regards,
Bernard

I’m still new with Shapton Glass stones but I learned about a gadget called “Sabitoru Rust Eraser” on a knife forum. I bought the Medium from Amazon and it seems to work very well for cleaning steel particles from the stone. If you search around Burrfection.com you might be able to find a video that describes the use of this product. He also sells the Rust Eraser but you might be better off dealing with Amazon.
Edit: Here’s a link to a Q & A to Burrfection.com in which Ryky, the owner, answers questions from his subscribers. Along the way he does mention the Rust Erasers. While the product’s name is what its design was for, it is in the ability to clean sharpening stones that he likes It.

How old are the stones. Is it possible you have cut through the thin top layer of glass stone?

Hey Matt,
That is where I got my stones from and he told me to ask on forums + contact Shapton Japan.

Bernard, Does the discolouring affect the performance of the stone? My Tormek Japanese water stone changed from the pristine light blue when new to a now greyish blue. As long as it works, all I do is to remove as many embedded steel particles as I can and just live with it.

Hey Fluddman,
Yeah little weird. Other than that, I would still highly recommend the Shapton glass stones.
Sharpening is so fast and so fun!
Cheers,
Bernard
