Sharpening carbide woodturning cutters
I know that carbide woodturning cutters are usually replaced when they get blunt, but they can also apparently be sharpened using a diamond wheel.
I just bought a Sorby Turnmaster set, and being cheap, was wondering just how hard it really is to sharpen them. I noticed that Carbatec have a 50mm diamond wheel, 400G, with a 6mm shank. ($35)
Is it likely to do the job? 400G is pretty fine. Too fine?
Carroll's sell a handle to hold the equivalent HSS cutters for sharpening, so I was thinking of making a jig to suit it, with the 50mm diamond wheel in an electric drill clamped horizontally.
I'd especially welcome input from anyone who's had experience in doing this, but all ideas & comments will be appreciated.
Edit: In the literature that came with the Turnmaster set, it mentioned that the carbide cutters can be sharpened, but gave no tips on doing it.
This is the 50mm x 1mm diamond wheel:

I haven't tried this method yet, but need to give it a go soon enough. I'm also sure Google will produce many other suggestions.

Thanks for that.
I did a quick Google search last night, but came up with no results. I must have used the wrong search keywords. Lots of results now. Maybe I misspelled something.
Got heaps of vids on the subject to look at tonight now.
Edit: I just had a look to see what I did wrong. The search term was: 'sharpen turnmaster carbide cutters'
Too specific, I guess. I got nothing but ads for Turnmaster sets.
Anyway, this method looks much better than the Carbatec wheel that I was considering. I was thinking of sharpening the edge. Didn't even consider laying the cutters flat on a diamond plate like that. Pity the end was cut off the vid, but it shows enough.
I'll have to hurry and blunt the new cutters, so I can try this.
(20 or 30 bowls, they say.)
Just thinking about it, I'd like to try sharpening the edge of one and the flat on another and see which is sharpest.
A pity the titanium coated HSS cutters can't be sharpened the same way.
I see that James Barry has a number of other interesting sharpening videos, too.... Steve

I give mine a sharpen on a fine diamond lap, I only lap the top face not the edge.
Seems to work OK.Brad.

Thanks Brad. Too easy. In fact, it sounds easier than sharpening the titanium/HSS cutters.
Do they sharpen up as good as new? Or better? The new square carbide cutter that came with the Turnmaster barely cuts, and then only if I cut sideways.
Edit: I just found this thread by Paul39: https://www.woodworkforums.com/f8/car...utters-158333/
And a cheap source of replacement cutters, mostly to fit the 'Easy' tools: azcarbide | eBay... Steve
