    Default Sharpening carving chisels.

Hi all, question for the experienced from a rank amateur.
Do flat carving chisels need to have the back lapped flat as in a bench chisels, or is a slight back bevel acceptable?

Chisels which have no curve and a bevel on only one side are not much used in carving.

Flat carving gouges (still called gouges, even though they have no curve) usually have a bevel of equal size on both sides. This makes them more controllable and predictable in a carving situation where most shapes are organic.

You can see this clearly enough in this image Pfeil Straight 2 Bevel Chisel 1-10mm | Series 1 Straight Bevel Chisels - Carbatec . Flat gouges are designated ‘no 1’ in both British and Continental schema.

If you must use a flat chisel with one bevel then I guess flattening the back would allow it to sharpen to a greater degree.
    Apologies for unnoticed autocomplete errors.
