Default Sharpening Dewalt DW735 blades in Melbourne

    Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone has a recommendation for a place to get Dewalt DW735 blades sharpened in Melbourne?

I spoke to 3 businesses in northern suburbs and they all quoted around $50 per set of 3 blades which is roughly what a new set of blades will cost from Amazon.

Has anyone found somewhere cheaper or perhaps has a good recommendation for buying replacement blades? The ones I mentioned above from Amazon are from JTEX in US so I assume they would be ok for quality.

    Thank you,
    Toni

They can be freshened up a couple of times with a diamond plate or even sandpaper using a home made jig.
There are plenty of home made jigs on line for ideas. I used one that held 2 blades clamped in a wood block and you run a plate or stone over them but as you have got three blades then something like this may suit. Blades that have location holes are termed as disposable but with care can be sharpened up a time or two if you only take off the minimum metal to get back to sharp.

    Personal recommendation:

Other than just buying new blades, start saving for a helical head with TC cutters and then ditch the blades. Believe me, when you install that into a DW735, the first question you'll ask yourself is, what have I been doing all these years? and then, jeez, how much time have I wasted fixing tearout, snipe ........

Thank you both for the suggestions!

Yes, I have thought about a helical head but I work exclusively with reclaimed timber and I'm worried that some of the timber I put through might datamage the $500+ head. At least with straight blades the damage maxes out at $50 for a new set of blades

I get what your saying toni. I have had one and I know what they're like. The cutters are individually removable so any damage wouldn't be too bad.

I wish helical heads were around when I was making furniture from recycled wood - what a revolution. Hit a nail... No big deal. Rotate or change a single cutter, not the entire set of blades. Nothin pisses you off more than putting a fresh set of blades in and hitting an effin nail a couple hours later.

You won't damage the head from recycled wood. Not unless you plan to run wood littered with rocks and screws...

Thanks all, sounds like I need to start saving for the helical cutter head

I put the Timbecon head in mine about 2 years ago. Not quite s good as the Shelix head but very much cheaper. You may not have to save so much after all.

Not had to touch a blade since. Still on the first side of the cutters.

I started out with a Helical head so I don't know what difference there is, however I have never had a problem with the head since getting my thicknesser and everything I run through it including plywood doesn't seem to bother the blades at all.
