Japanese Stone; what have I got?
Picked this up today. I think it's a 1000 grit. Is it a waterstone?
The label on the stone says Matsunaga.We don't know how lucky we are......

Looks like it is. From that 2nd photo it may be a combination stone 250grit one side and 1000 on the other.

Yes, combination it is. The stone does seem to separating along the join though.
I'm tempted to complete the process and lay them out in a box side by side maybe?
Or is trying to split them a disaster waiting to happen?

Aha.......google is my friend...........it is a waterstone. I'll keep it in one piece and use it in the kitchen then.We don't know how lucky we are......

Might look like it's splitting, it probably isn't so leave it be. Splitting them is difficult at best.
#1000 grit King deluxe on one side, #250 grit Green Corundum on the other.
Leaving it in the kitchen for knives is not a bad plan at all.
Oh yeah, needs soaking before use.
Good luck with it, and it should give some good service since you now know what it is.
