    Default Veritas jointer blade sharpener

    http://www.veritastools.com/products/Page.aspx?p=121

A couple of years ago when I was in the States I picked up one of these blade holders but I haven't had much success ever putting it to use.

I'm about to start a new project and I thought it was about time to sharpen my 6in jointer knives since the last few projects have been made from Ironbark and the blades have suffered somewhat. I decided to give the Veritas jig another try, however all I seem to do is get frustrated and am no closer to having sharp blades.

First off the pictures in the instruction guide don't match the profile of the actual holder.Trying to set a knife in the holder as per the instructions is just not possible. The part of the holder the blade clamps against is, unlike the diagrams, a very thick profile and it is not possible as far as I can see to sit the bevel a mere 1/8" forward of the tool holder and have it contact the sharpening paper before the holder does.

I happen to have two American pennies and if I try that suggested method of aligning the blades in the holder using them, the clamped blade projects a good 1/4" in front of the jig, but I still have a problem getting the blade's bevel to sit flat on the paper without the leading edge of the holder still touching down first.

Is there anybody out there actually using one of these guides to sharpen blades in house? If there is, what tricks do you use to setup for sharpening?

These units in my opinion are more trouble than they are worth, you can touch up you knives several times while still in the machine, the only time you need to remove them is when they need grinding.
Disconnect machine from power, lock the cutter head with a timber wedge, using a fine slip stone run along the edge of blade (watch your fingers) while resting on the cutter head until sharp.
Should only take a few passes then remove the burr ont underside with the narrow edge of the stone, wipe the oil from the knife (watch your fingers) and you are good to go

Thanks China. I persevered yesterday and sharpened the blades yesterday with the best alignment of the jig I could manage. This is the first time I have tried to sharpen these blades since I acquired the jointer. The jointer was well setup when I got it and I've been surprised how well the blades have stayed sharp.

I think the blades were really ready for a grinding. One was particularly worse than the others. I guess that one might have been set a touch high. The grinding went fairly easy using wet and dry but the actual new bevel angle is only eyeballed and probably not very repeatable.

If these blades stay sharp for as long as the original set, iit probably doesn't matter much. Touching up with a slip will help stretch the useful sharpness time. Now I just have to reinstall the blades and make sure everything is well aligned.
