Default Stanely blade - removing protective film

Hello, I have bought two blades for my Stanley spokeshaves and I am now fettling the blades, firstly by flattening the backs and then by sharpening the bevel.

The blade is covered with a strong protective film which I am having trouble with. It is clogging up my diamond plate quite badly.

I have tried to remove this film with a drill mounted brass wire brush, soaked it in Oomph, a citric acid solution, and tried to remove it with steel wool. All to no avail.

You can see it in the attached photo where some is still left after 10 minutes of solid work on the diamond plates

Can anyone please advise the best method to remove this film?

Do you have any Acetone? I find it removes most coatings.
