Default A "Stone Vice" for sharpening.... A clever idea to look at

I stumbled over this page, which describes a rather neat story on the development of a Vice-Like holder for stones.

It looks like a great idea. It looks like its work giving a go.

    Enjoy....

    That’s an interesting idea,

An because I’m feeling brave,I have always questioned (in silence because I’m weak) whether there is any perceived damage done to a stone by rolling a very small hand powered steel roller up and down while sharping a tool.
I also may have to much time to think [emoji848]!!!!

    Cheers Matt.

The roller damage to the stone would depend upon the ratio of adhesive to abrasive as well as the hardness (?plasticity?) of the adhesive.
How hard must you lean on this to get a result? I'd go gently and observe the progress.
If I had many plane blades to touch up, this would be wonderful.
I have many different edges that couldn't fit on this ( eg spoke shave blades).

These designs were the child of Brent Beach, who passed away (unexpectedly, as he was quite young) about a year ago. Brent was quite prolific in his testing of steels and on sharpening. He had one sharpening method, and one only. It involved numerous secondary and tertiary bevels created using a honing guide. The set up was extremely fussy and, while it no doubt got edges sharp, was geared towards a beginner who was not actually building furniture ... the method was just so inefficient.

    Regards from Perth
