Veritas bench grinder jig
Folks, I am after anyones experiences with the Veritas bench grinder jig. This is the one that you mount in front of your grinding wheel and rest your tools on for sharpening.
I am not going to bite the bullet and get a Tormek, I can't afford or justify the expense for what I do. I make pens and like to sharpen the few bench chisels that I also have so spending $1000+ on the Tormek is not an option.
I have a bench grinder with the standard 3000rpm wheel and a slower 175(I think) rpm wet stone attached to the back.
Is it worth buying the Veritas jig or shold I try and rig up a block that I can mount a bar on and then run the Tormek jigs on the bar?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Paul

Paul, go into Google and type in Veritas bench grinder jig. Up near the top of the search results is a link to these forums from 23-10-05.
Well worth a read. Same result, much less dinheiro.

Paul, I have the Veritas and it does a good job. Next time I might be tempted to just make one out of wood, plenty of plans for them around and it doesn't get any cheaper than making your own.

I have one too, but wouldn't buy it again. Does the job, but no better than something you make yourself or a cheapy from Carbatec.
Save your $$$ IMHO

I bought a similar jig (clone) off Ebay from a seller in Tasmania ,for very cheap ,its made of aluminium and has a slot and comes with a mitre gauge .
I have since modified it with a slot so the wheel protrudes into the jig plate."Outside of a dog a book is man's best friend ,inside a dog it's too dark to read"

Garn Woodlee, admit it, you pressed down hard without tightening the spanners
I use one of those too on one side. Works fine for woodturning scrapers, skews, roughing gouges and bowl gouges with a modest fingernail grind.
If you want to get swept back wings on gouges then you can find plans in webland for DIY jigs.Cheers, Ern

I have the Veritas.
Very happy with it.
Expensive - perhaps - would I buy another for another grinder - Yes I would.
Any of the Veritas gear I have I would replace if it became necessary [have not had to at this stage]. Quality, accuracy, durability and tools that do what they are supposed to do count for a lot for me.
I have no affiliations with the company or any reseller - I just am a great fan of their gear for the above reasons.
Just some thoughts, regards,
Bob

The Veritas jig has its own adjustment handles on the tightening bolts, which are able to be rotated independently out of the way when you are finished - no need to go searching for a wrench when you want to change the grind angle or drop the platform out of the way entirely.
Lee Valley & Rockler (and others) also sell the swivelling handles in their jig knob section, so you can probably convert one of the other jigs to quick adjustment too

G'day Paul,
I use the Veritas Grinding Set & Mk.II Honing Guide. This combo works well for me. The one feature I like is the ability to square the blade using the same reference side, the right side of the bevel, for both grinding and honing.
This has allowed me to square grind and sharpen/hone my blades to greater accuracy.
Just my 2 cents.

I've got one of the $50 or so kits from carbatec. It's fine, but requires adjustment to make sure the blade angle is correct. I'm not sure if the veritas ones allow the angle to be more easily adjusted, but if they do this this would be a plus.
Given that the final hone needs to be done on a stone then the accuracy that this jog provides is more than acceptable.
Cheers,
Tom
