    Default Veritas side clamping guide

I have the Veritas mark 2 guide with the small blade side clamping attachment.
Question - Is there a situation where the new guide will work better for me?

    I don't understand your question.
Does your "small blade side clamping attachment" look like this?

or are you thinking of something else?

Yes it does. My question is about the new Veritas side clamping guide that is not part of the mark 2 system.

Mat, if you have the Mk ll with the side clamping addition, then you are well set. I do not see the new side clamp offering much beyond firmer clamping for long chisel blades. The new guide is not ideal for short blades, such as Japanese oire nomi. Of course, the new guide can go much wider and work with wider plane blades, where the addition cannot.

attached is the Lee Valley Sharpening by Hand catalogue. The catalogue is free to anyone who walks into one of LV's stores so it should be OK to share on this site.
Page 6 has a comparison of the side clamping guide vs the short blade guide vs the Mk II guide vs the narrow blade guide. (and the following two or four pages show examples of each guide's use.)

The Sharpening by Hand catalogue is also useful when looking at the different grades of stones

    have fun
