Definetly sell them both,,,,,with the money buy 1/2 dozen carpatec guides and a ton of timber........

I don't have any skew chisels but this seems like the perfect opportunity to buy some.
What are they used for?

Is it not possible to sharpen skews using the Mark 2?

Yeah, well I ordered mine in the great "Bessey Clamp Buy of '05" in January.

Two weeks after I got my mits on it in May I found out that it had been superseeded.

Ah well I can't complain really. It was still a great deal.

I wouldnt worry , you can get excellent results with the old guide, I do .

Besides if you bought the guide at the special discounted price of $49 from carbatec then there is no price comparison... if not, well join the club, bought mine a month before carbatec dropped the price .

Nevertheless, I love it and it has taken my sharpening to another level compared to my old stanley copy carbatec guide.

PS Jack, just made myself 2 skews Right and Left from 12mm Stanley chisels (on sale at Bunnings for 7 each ), they are really handy for cleaning up the bottoms of dovetails.

If it works why change it ?....... I think its good that people find something that they enjoy using......

Still think, however you would get much faster results, of the same quality or better, by hand from well dressed AlO wheel grinder straight to well trued hard felt buffing wheel loaded with that green compound(carpa-tec)......when it comes to chisels that is.....skewed or square......theres no middle man.....if you get my drift (no medium stone needed) grinding is fast to establish straight edge (take straight in) , grind bevel to get burr.....buffing knocks of burr straight to a polished finish, back off on polishing stone........2 minutes tops.....1 minute mostly.....and best of all no small anoying dishes in your waterstones .....you can leave your waterstones to plane blades.....

I'm being serious mate (believe it or not)..... I understand ,,why change what works for you....its just that if I was in your position I'd know that I'd like to hear about anything that may significantly change my work.......

Derek has just informed me that a skew blade add on for the Mark II may be in the wings.

I have had an offer from someone to purchase the Mark I from me so am no longer looking for ideas as to what I can do with it.

In fact, if I do see any ideas I will be disappointed as it would be just my luck that the minute I sell it I will want it again

G'Day Jack, I've been out of woodworking for ages, and just resurrected my honing guide, the early model as per your top photo; I've forgotten the technique for setting the 4 position knob to get a secondary bevel. Much appreciate if you can help me out, do you have a copy of the instruction sheet you could copy for me ??

I have just purchased on of the older guides and have the manual, Im happy to photo copy it and post to you, or i can scan it in..
