    Sounds like you've given it a thorough workout.

    With jigs like this I've found that very minor variations in clamping are magnified at the pointy end.

    Stanley blades are fairly thin too so how you pressure the tip may well give you differing results, and indeed some folk exploit this to round off the corners ever so slightly.

    Hock blades are nice; but the backs are not lapped at the factory and IME this should be done. This is a whole new realm of principle meeting frustration! ;-}

    I think that you should not use crap blades that you have to hammer flat? Most people seem to consider the MK2 the bees knees i terms of results there have been rave report on it for over 3 years here and else where. I would try it on a good blade first and then report back.
