    Thanks FF, this has been an education. So you and Derek are saying one need not do anything at all with the back other than stropping??
    By the way, the water stone does bring up a mirror finish on the PM-V11 so it is doing something. It obviously removes the 1000 grit scratches pretty well.

    Certainly I trust Veritas' flattening - I think LV/Veritas are the most fair dinkum company out there, actually. I don't really care about a mirror finish, and I don't strop either, but mainly because I've always been satisfied with the 14k paste edge. If it shaves, it's sharp enough.

    Dull red is fine, HSS was specifically developed to have a high red hardness; it will hold 60 Rockwell C up to 600C, cobalt HSS can go even hotter.
