There is an interesting post by Konrad Sauer on how he laps his planes and blades on his blog.
Worth a read, if only to admire his planes!

He certainly seems to have mastered hand lapping.

just an 80g abrasive paper stuck to a granite block. Colour coded grit in this case.

This will be the first flattrning check in 18 months, and my forecast is they won't be too far out.

Just been in the shed playing (again) with the Sorby ProEdge in order to do a few bench chisel bottoms. That works somewhat better than the Worksharp discs I've mounted on the lathe as the exposure to abrasive is more consistent across the width of the blade - but there's still more exposure at the leading edge for some reason.

To return to hand lapping on stones, none of them are absolutely flat. Some diamond plate makers specify the tolerance.

Just as well the task only has to be done once! But I can see with a set of parers that could be a huge job. Then, as discussed, there's the important decision as to how much is enough for practical purposes.
    Cheers, Ern
