Wet stone sharpener
Makita have a wet stone sharpener for under $300. It is one of those slow turning (560rev) top stone devices.
Has anyone got a review of this sharpener?
Thanks

Last time I went looking for this product, it wasn''t available in Australia.
Have you actually seen it advertised here?

Bugger - another useful gadget that we don't get
I've noticed recently that a lot of articles in so-called "Australian" woodworking mags (obviously shared content with US publications....) feature tools only available in the US.
It's a bit frustrating when you see them using really clever tools that we just can't get.
That 110V transformer, plus low priced US tools, is starting to look more attractive every day !

In the Chrome browser, I just highlight what BB has in bold under his name, right click, and select Search Google.
It's then possible to go Advanced and in the 'one or more' fields of search terms enter 'review', 'test' and 'comparison'.
And then brew a strong coffee and sit down and read.
But I won't just now. A bottle of fizz is in the fridge and the missus is thirsty ;-}Cheers, Ern

I paid a bit more attention to this advert in "The Australian Woodworker" however the mag is dated 1996 and I haven't as yet followed it up...But, Timbecon in WA with a phone # 1300 880 996 adn online Timbecon Tools - Everything you need to get wood working. has a similar machine by "Sherwood" for $329, again but...it is not a wet stone sharpener. It does have the extra long jig for thicknesser blades at 406mm in length.
This machine is called a 16 inch surface grinder and states " a grinder purpose built to sharpen planner blades" and that is the reason I am searching for one of these.
At local sharpening cost for double sided thicknesser blades for a Ryobi Thicknesser it would only need to sharpen them 12 times to recover the cost of the machine as against cost of sharpening, which goes up from time to time, and I have a jointer with blades to sharpen as well.
First one tt source this one gets an all day sucker from the boss!!!!!

Replying to my own post??? Oh! Well, I am not talking to me at the moment.
The new Sherwood 16" surface grinder at Timbecon is around $600, there are two models.
Calculating this out at the cost of sharpening my thicknesser blades I would need to do 20 sharpens to justify the cost, but there are the jointer blades as well. (and probably a couple of mates when the word gets out, and the machine proves its worth)
I sent Timbecon an email asking for more information. [email protected]

Have you considered the manual option? Jig with abrasive sheet on plate glass for touching up the edge. Clicky

Probably okay for shorter blades but how easy is it with 32mm blades.
I must admit that the bloke that sharpens my thicknesser blades dose a better job than they are new. New ones at Bunnings are $57.00.
I think that if I had a sharpener that I wouldn't let the blades get so blunt, but then again too much sharpening will give me less life of blade...Oh! Dear! What a worry life is in the sawdust pit.
