    Default Woops! Skin loss

Can't quite figure out how this happened but lapping the back of a 3/8 firmer chisel on a #1000 waterstone I abraded a good chunk of the skin on the two fingers resting astride the shaft.

Saw the blood before feeling the pain.

Not the finger tips, further down towards the crease. Neat round holes the diameter of a small pea and deep enough for blood to be all over the place.

Can only assume there was a minor wave of slurry, abrasive and swarf, that lapped over the top of the chisel. The chisel top edges weren't sharp.

Dammit; that's two dodgy hands. And worse, both Muslim and Christian style clean-ups in the loo are close to impossible
    Cheers, Ern

Ouchies. So should we stay up wind of you for a while?

I've done similar sanding some small blocks. It wasn't until I was staining the wood with blood that I noticed I'd flattened the top of a couple of fingers. So I changed hands...and did it again

When I tried to cut an index finger off on a SCMS I had to learn to be ambidextrous while I had my hand bandaged up and the finger in a splint for a few weeks. It was a surprising challenge that had me trying to invent things like the Comfort Wipe.

Although, it was nothing like the time I had a dozen stitches in me "down there". You just can't win in that situation and would rather not eat at all.

LOL. Thanks RedShirtGuy. That Comfort Wipe is a gem. Will get one, attach some velcro and use it on chisel tips in future!

    Michael, it'll either be the hose or the missus. Hose sounds better. Wonder what the neighbours will think when they see one running in the window ;-}

Ron, the forum mantra is if there were no pics it didn't happen, and I'd hate to let down the members

And dammit twice over; I ricked the back this morning trying to return to Christian style with the recovering broken wrist. How the h*ll will I explain this to the physio
    Cheers, Ern

    Physio was cool. He understands about cross-cultural tangles ;-}

So I'm bored witless. One hole was deep enough to break open each time it came under pressure. Needed a decent method of dressing. Rang Dial-a-Nurse. Hopeless (yes I could breathe OK; no I hadn't severed an artery; no I wasn't on drugs when it happened). Went to the Chemist about one of those paint-on films. Wouldn't be strong enough. Replaced Elastoplast several times and finally the bleeding stopped.

Now have stinky unwashed fingers with filthy bandages. Ughh. They're going to come off tonight and have some alcohol slopped on them.

Meantime there's the virgin Sigma 8000 waiting to be tried out, and a couple of newly acquired Bergs for flattening and polishing. Maybe get some Kevlar gloves.

    Default poor thing?/?/?/?

Ernie, I am unable to tell just what you`re up to here.
If you are SOOOO wounded, who typed your post-physio thread then?---Is this what the tame nurse was for ?
ORRR are you just holding out for some sympathy??
Maybe if you are so bored you could start devising some safe, rffective and novel ways to use BLUNT tools111
Whatever you do though, be sure to smother your wounds with PawPaw ointment. It is known in this house as Magic Ointment.
    SERIOUSLY

    Heal up mate.

Just bored Ron. And it wasn't the fingertips that got the tear-out.

Yes, how to use blunt tools. Good topic. How shall we count the ways?

Magic ointment eh? In my house band-aids were sposed to be magic. Such a loss of innocence.

In the context of this bit of sharing, I don't think I could claim a shred of sympathy, and delicately refrained from asking for more info.

    ...

Peter, you'll send me off to Google to find out more. Just need to figure out what search terms to enter

Good idea Michael. Internally and externally administered.

If the elastoplast has stuck, rest assured that most will be internal!!

    Kevlar gloves: click

I've emailed them a query about whether they'd work.

Gees Ern you are making it harder for this sking trip.

Any more accidents and they will have to strap the poles to your arms.

Ern a lot of those type gloves are good for slicing type cuts but no good for jab style cuts where you slip of the wood etc.
