Should I be worried ?
Hi ! I have very little used my bench grind in the last 10 years, until I took up wood turning a few weeks ago - though we still used it a bit...
But the other day I spotted these spotty stains that looks like spots of rust ?? Never saw them before...
Yet my workshop is neither damp nor cold.
I know that a bad wheel can explode, so should I be worried ? What is it ? Shall I change the wheel ??
Thanks )ImageUploadedByTapatalk1386841473.832345.jpg

I would dress the wheel and see if that removes them - if it does you are OK.
If more appear in the same or other locations I would not use the wheel - I would even take it back to where you bought it from as the manufacturer might want to know about it.

Why think about it too much? Why take second hand advice? You have looked at it , you are not confident with it, fix it!
Really, if it is 10 plus years old, just spend the 30 bucks on a new one and be safe (er).____________________________________________________________

AS the wheel is old and hasn't been used regularly take it off & perform a ring test to make sure it has not been accidentally damaged. http://www.nortonindustrial.com/uplo...g%20Wheels.pdf

Could have just been bits of metal off something you sharpened gone rusty in that time. Even in "not damp or cold" there is still moisture in the air.

I've heard also that the specks are exactly that = rust/iron fragments from sharpening.
Not all of it burns off as sparks.
The other thing, every time, don't ever stand in line with the wheel when you start it up,
stand beside it. No matter what the age of the wheel is.
I taught in the University part of a comprehensive college.
A wheel disintegrated and crippled a millwright student.
