    Default 110V to 240V

    Hi all,

Is there an easy way to change a 110V battery charger to a 240V without using a transformer.

    Regards Chris

Most USA tools etc don't have easy options for voltage changes. The charger being a transformer itself, however may be alterable by an expert depending upon whether it has a selection of taps to select input voltage.

Some appliances and equipment, have internal voltage selectabilty through wiring options which may or may not be obvious. The trouble is, many modern pieces would not be alterable by anyone other than an expert with the precise wiring diagram. I personally will not attempt it on anything that doesn't say something like "for 240v connect + here". Even then I should add the prevailing caveat that we should leave all such things to the experts.

Being a charger, you may be thinking its not worth spending money to get it compatible with 240v. However, it may still be worthwhile getting a transformer of reasonable capacity that can also be used for other stuff. In that way you will have access to the wide range of much cheaper tools from the USA. That's how I got started on buying tools from America and the cost of the transformers have been paid back many times over.

Check the voltage range on the charger, it might already work for 240v? If the range is 100V-240V then you're good to go. I'm in the Navy and our FFG's run 110V. We can still buy tools off the shelf in Australia that can be used on the ships if the voltage range is ok. All of my camera chargers here at home are 100-240V.
It's only a mistake if you don't learn from it.
