Default Is 12" docking saw less accurate than 10" you think ?

    Probably a silly quesion.

I'll have to buy a Sliding docking saw sometime. There's a 10" makita model on special, and I'm tempted to buy.

But, uno, a 12" probably be more handy. But only if the accuracy is still good enough.

See, I've noticed on some table saws that a 10" blade cuts cleaner than a 12"......which I thought was simply because there was more width to wobble.

There's a big 12" ryobi at work we dock with....and the cuts pretty good. Could be better, but its just for the large windows we're making so the accuracy doesn't have to be ultra fantastic.. no time to make it that good anyway.

Would you buy the 12" over the 10" if you had the choice ?....am I making sense ?

    Thanks.

    Jake,
I've had two SCMSs, both Makitas and both 10". Both were bought for onsite work where portability is an important consideration. When I bought the first one about 17 years ago, the 12" machine was a lot heavier, larger and more awkward to carry than the 10". When the first one started sounding a bit dodgy after more than 10 years I flogged it off to cash convertors before it died altogether and got the newer model 10" at a really good price when one of the local stores was closing down. The newer 12" is not too much bigger and heavier than the 10" and they brought out another model again which is only fractionally larger than the 10". If I were buying today I might buy the 12", but having said that I can't remember ever needing the extra depth of cut. I've used 12" SCMSs belonging to other blokes on site and haven't noticed any reduction in accuracy. Possibly if you were doing a compund cut into a really large lump of something hard you'd need to be more careful so as not to introduce any side thrust on the blade, but you tend to have to do this anyway. So in summary accuracy is not an issue that would dissuade me from buying a 12" SCMS, the only real issues for me are portability and price.

Thanks Mick. Sounds like I shouldn't be worried about accuracy.

But the 10" is the one on sale. No 12"...but if I'll rarely need it (makes sense) I'll just buy the 10.

    Ta mate.

I agree with Mick. I've never really needed a 12", though when I was buying I had the same concerns as you. My 10" Makita has been accurate and has served me very well.
