12" Jointer/Thicknesser Questions
Hi All,
I have never used one of these beasts before, my question is how well do they perform with the standard 2-3HP single phase motors? Are there any limitations?
What are the benifits of using the identical machine in a 4hp 3phase configuration?
Thanks All
Joe

Hi Joe,
Which machine do you mean?
I have a Metabo 12" jointer/thicknesser which I'm delighted with if that's the one you mean.

If you mean a 12" thicknesser the single phase works well, my only concern is that the manufacturer states that they can remove 3mm in a single pass, I very much doubt that and I turn the handle a quarter revolution for each pass.
The motor does not slow down and it runs smoothly, also use a DC as they generate a serious amount of shavings.
MIne is a 2hp.
If this is not what you are referring to, disregard this notice and refer to my potato peeler in hints and tips.Stupidity kills. Absolute stupidity kills absolutely.

Iain,
where can you get a 12" potato peeler? How may Hp are they? Do they come in 3phase as well as single? Can you get a horizontal slot morticing attachment for them?

Is you put warped timber through a thicknesser, it comes out warped and thinner.
If you put a log in there, does it come out as dowel?

Hi BigAl,
I haven't really decided on a Machine Yet, at this stage I am leaning towards a european combination machine, simply becuase I dont have the space for separates.
I am just trying to decide if I should bite the bullet and upgrade to 3 phase before I purchase the machinery.
All the gear costs the same, my only expense is in upgrading the service.
Thanks
Joe

BigAl,
is the 12 inch Metabo jointer/thicknesser you're referring to the ADH1630 model? If so, how does it perform?
Can you get a clean finish without any marring on the surface from the infeed serrated steel roller?
Do you get any snipe? and do you need and extension outfeed table when thicknessing reasonably long pieces.
Are the blades re-sharpenable?
Does the motor have enough grunt?
Is the lever height adjustment for surface planing (jointer mode) sturdy? (ie. it doesn't lower when feeding heavy pieces to alter the cutting depth)
I think I've asked all I can think of for now. All the advice would be helpful as I am currently in the market for a machine and deciding between carbatecs ML-392, Scheppach HMS260 ci or Metabo's ADH1630.
Thank in advance Evan

Den,
I've read reviews on the new De Walt and sounds very good compared to other machines in its format ie. 12 to 13 inches. However I am looking for a jointer/thicknesser combo; I have a Delta 12 1/2 inch thicknesser and it's given up; needs new motor.
I don't want a similar machine because it's far too loud (screamer) and my neighbour sometimes had something to say when I used it when she was home. Could only use it for short periods during mid morning early arvos.
But anyway my neighbour is not the reason I need an over and under machine.
I like the fact that they have induction motors and are more quiet and save space which is very limited where I live and that I can joint board edges instead of using handplanes (no. 7) for long boards which we all know can be tedious and inaccurate to a degree.

Joe,
I'm not sure what brand you're talking about, but in my experience the 2-3 vs 4 HP with 1phase are not mutually exclusive. I have a single phase, 4HP combo machine (it's a Hammer). IMHO, the more power you can get, the better.
Regards,
Mike.
