Default Problems with 7 inch Carbatec quick release vice

Just bought the Carbatec vise and found that as you try and tighten the vise the quick release mechanism seems to activate and therefore just clicks around without tightening properly. Some purchase is availabe but not enough to hold wood adequately. Rang Carbatec who said that part of the vise is faulty and requires a different casting underneath the vise to activate the half nut properly to secure the 2 jaws in place. The guy I spoke to said that he would have to get the part from Brisbane but it could be a couple of days before they are in, meanwhile Easter is approaching so I wouldn't get the part for a few days. He mentioned that I might be able to fix the part but didn't specify how. Anyone else had this problem as the guy said that hundreds of these vises have had the same problem?

I would be looking carefully at the mechanism and trying to understand what makes it work. Then determine why it doesn't. Only then can you (personally) have an idea of what to do and if it is possible. It may just require a re-alignment of something, or a tightening of a bolt. I have 2x 9" vices and occasionally they do this too. Because they respond to a jiggle, I have not looked further. Your problem may be very minor.

Thanks, Derek. Have tried to jiggle and move parts but nothing seems to help, guess it's back to Carbatec when they have stock.

Carbatec in Melbourne now have a very good reputation for looking after their customers so I am sure they will put things right for you.
