    Default Aldi tools

Hi folks - just a bit of a heads-up for anyone who might be interested ...

The weekly Aldi specials catalog showed some interesting little el cheapo tools available from today so I went down to my local Aldi store at opening time this morning to get a couple of their $15 Angle grinder stands ( one for me and one for a mate) and likewise their $20 digital vernier calipers.

Now, none of us expects much for $15 but I have to say that the angle grinder stand is a beauty for the money and will do me nicely for occasional cutting of things that I should not cut on my new Triton Steel Cutter - eg cutting down stainless steel or high tensile steel bolts. I fitted my Bosch angle grinder to it and it all goes together a treat ...

Unfortunately, all of the angle grinder stands were sold out of my local Aldi store by lunch time but they had plenty of the digital vernier calipers. I was tempted to buy a similar el cheapo one at the same price from Carba-Tec in their Brisbane woodworking show sale last week but I am glad that I did not. The Carba-Tec ones were polycarbonate and were just lying loose on a table in the store. The Aldi ones are all stainless steel and come in a hinged, foam lined, wooden box with a spare battery...

Once again, I won't pretend that these are anything more than $20 calipers but as my poor old eyes age, it is becoming harder to look at a steel rule against a bit of wood to ascertain if it is 7/8 inch or 3/4 inch thick so at least these digital gizmos will tell me that in big letters.

I suspect that the angle grinder stands will be all gone across the country by now but the digital verniers may still be available.

    Hi Guys
Aldi Belmont (geelong)Had 50 or more cutoff gizmos and about 150 or more calipers at 12.00 today.Got calipers and checked them against my top quality dial calipers(Mitutoyo)that I have had for years, and they read the same and quality is fine.Maybe scale may come off .it is a stick on arrangement. But being a digital readout(imperial plus metric) you dont need stick on scale anyway, because the readout tells you the full size you are measuring.Has a spare battery as well with them.Cant go wrong

I imported a Rockler digital height gauge recently at about $82 landed at my doorstep. However, in looking at the Aldi digital vernier gauge it is clear to see that the Rockler digital gauge is just a cut-down digital vernier attached to a heavy base.

That is, they have taken the basic slider/digital readout parts of a vernier gauge, mounted it vertically on heavy steel block, and added an extension arm to one of the jaws of the calipers. Of course, I am hoping that the basic mechanism of my height gauge is worth more than $20 and indeed digital vernier gauges themselves range upwards in price to $70 at Carba-Tec but nonetheless that is all that the manufacturers of the height gauge have done. The electronics would be the same.

So if you want a cheap digital height gauge, it would not take too much effort to replicate the idea.
