Default Arbortech sanding attachment for angle-grinder

I used my Arbortech sanding attachment for the angle-grinder for the first time today. I was blown away by how good it was for sanding smooth the sharply curved areas near the joints of the rocker that I am currently building. With previous chairs, I had spent many hours shaping these areas with chisels and sandpaper, and found it very tedious and laborious. Because of the high revs of the angle grinder, the sanding attachment is extremely aggressive, so you need to use a very delicate touch, gently nibbling away the waste by stroking the wood with the edge of the disk.

Previously, when I saw pictures of Sam Maloof's rockers, I had imagined the old master spending weeks toiling away carving those voluptuous curves with hand-tools. Now, I suspect that I have rumbled his secret; he probably shapes his glued-up rockers in a morning with a deftly wielded angle-grinder.

That is exactly what he does. Saw them doing it on that little doco that aired a few weeks ago.

Yeap, I saw that doco too, it's a team effort.
Sam does the design & some of the cutting out & most of the joints. One of the other members of the team gets to rough sand/grind the profiles, Sam tweaks it & then it goes off to other members for fine sanding & finishing.
