Compass planes?
I needed a compass plane for a job recently and rang a few shipwright mates but no one had one I could borrow. I'd like to get one and have been checking out Ebay. I'm not in a tearing rush and am unwilling to pay collector type prices so I'll bide my time. I've noticed though that there seem to be two types: the simpler Stanley 20 type and the more complex type 113 which has the geared/interlocking adjustment arms. What are the comparitive advantages/disadvantages of either? The second type is more complex and looks more fragile, but looks like it may have a larger range of adjustment. So who's got one (or more), and how do you find it (them).
Mick
Just reread this and realised it's a bit ambiguous. I meant how do you find it to use, but any tips on finding one to buy would be great, as would any offers to sell one in your possessionLast edited by journeyman Mick; 5th May 2005 at 07:27 PM. Reason: ambiguous

Hello Mick,
I have both models but have done wery little with either. On cedar either inside or outside arcs are easy but on harder timbers the 113 is not as good as the 20. This might reflect on the individual planes cause the 113 needs renovation work. As to supply I do know of a retired cabinet maker who has a 113 and a 55 for sale. I will see him on Saturday and find out his asking price if you want. Good luck with your hunting, Bill

Mick,
I own one of the Record compass planes that used to be featured in the Carbatec catalogue until about two years ago. I am very happy with it and find it invaluable for planing concave curves. But I would not think of selling it.

I've also got a Record Compass plane and very happy with it, doesn't get that much use though.
You can buy new compass planes made by Kunz (Germany), Carbatec are one of there dealers they would get one in for you if not in stock.
And no I don't sell my tools, sorry.

Major,
It isn't really worth your while hanging round my shed in the hope that I may snuff it. I have willed all my hand tools to my nephew

A gentleman at the Maitland (NSW) markets last Sunday had two 113s for sale. He was asking $300 each. They looked to be in reasonable condition, but didn't look too closely. Can't say how well they compare to the Records.
I'm sure if you were interested, he'd be there with at least one of them next month and someone who lives near there would help you get them. If you are interested and no one else puts their hand up, PM me.
