AEG circular saw
My 20 year old Ryobi has just had a bearing collapse and I have been quoted $70-$80 to repair it. Methinks that is not a good investment.
Bunnings has an AEG CS66 7.5inch saw for $129.
Does anyone have experience with AEG or this particular model? AEG are not a major brand in Australia but they seem to be good. Any thoughts?

I haven't had any experience with the AEG but have seen them and they look to be quite a sturdy unit. I would say that after 20 years of work, the Ryobi may have some other wearing parts that may soon be giving problems too, this is the way it usually works. everything goes well for 20 years or so and then everything seems to go at the same time.
At least if you buy the new one, you will have a warranty to fall back on. Having said that the Ryobi could go on for another 20 years.Reality is no background music.
Cheers John

You had a good run from the old Ryobi; at that age it'd be a Made in Japan model; might be worth repairing and if it's only bearings, you could have a go yourself.
The new AEG that Bunnings & the like sell, are Made in China to a price, not the old quality tool out of Gremany of years past.

I had a look at the Ryobi yesterday and it says on the label that it is made in USA. I am really thinking of replacing it, but AEG is looking a bit doubtful at the moment, despite the low price. I might go the bit extra and get a Makita.

The old Made in Japan, USA, Germany, etc. were so much better quality power tools,
than the branded and other junk that comes out of China [all made to a price].
If you're for sure going to replace it,
have a look at the trade quality tools,
though a bit more expensive you'll get you money back in longevity.
Cheers, Crowie

Not that hard to replace with a $10 bearing. Have a go..can't make it worse. Outer bearing quite easy to replace.
When my AEG 210mm, same vintage died after 25 years I kept the switch and knobs etc...you never know when you will use them.
cheers

aeg saw
I have been associated with aeg and the old blue coloured saws are the ones to buy, if you can/t find one I would buy a Makita

I was shocked at Bunnings
Thanks for your suggestions fellas. Today I went to Bunnings intending to buy a Makita saw as I was a bit nervous about the orange Made in China AEG.
Picked up the blue Makita and guess what - Made in China.
Picked up the green Makita and guess what - Made in China.
Picked up the green (amateurs) Bosch and guess what - Made in China.
Picked up the blue (tradesman quality) Bosch and guess what - Made in China.
I thought the Makita and blue Bosch were made in Japan and Germany respectively. It seems like China is set to become the world's factory. I am surprised.
Looks like we will all have to buy Festool if we don't want Chinese made.
So I went for the $129 AEG because it has a 3 year warranty, came with 2 blades and the base plate is cast rather than the pressed metal on the others. My theory is that I have got 3 years warranty coverage as opposed to 1 year on the others. And since it wont get anything like heavy use I think I am OK.
Haven't taken it out of the box yet but I will be using it this week.
