Default Is anything made in Australia anymore?

A comment was made today by a customer reguarding some of the tools and machinery in my workshop.
"They don't make em like that anymore"
He was refering to things such as: A set of chisels , handsaws, planes and many other tools many of which are Australian made.
The last time I looked at a set of Stanley screwdrivers , they were Taiwanese and obviously of lower quality than the Australian stanleys I'd bought previously. Sidchrome; the same.
We used to make some of the best , most practical and reliable tools in the world.
What the bloody hell are we doing?

Here's a list of some of the great Aussie gear I've owned and still use:
Sidchrome spanners , socket sets ,pliers etc
    Titan chisels
    Falcon planes
    Stanley planes
    Silex squares and bevels
HG Plumb hammers and caulking irons
    Fairfax cutters
Paulcall , Malco and Dawn clamps and vices
    Cyclone hammers
P&N drill bits and Taps & dies
    Starrat hole saws
    GMF grinders
    CIG tradesman welder
Hyco , Woodfast , Morris , Premo , Durden and Mcpherson machine tools
and a whole ton of other stuff.
I don't think you could buy any of this stuff anymore.
    Please tell me I wrong.
Do we produce any tools or machine tools in Australia still?

if Holdens and Fords are anything to go by, you can see why we import machinery.

I am sure that there are a host of local specialist manufacturers that are revered around the world. HNT Gordon and Colen Clenton come immediately to mind. At the other end are power tool manufacturers such as Vicmarc.

Actually, not so many of them, either, these days!

Some of the blokes are spending too much time in the shed!

P&N have a factory in Hamilton Vic so they are stll ozmade.
    Cyclone is still in business.

The real interesting thing is Australian souvenirs. Most souvenirs are made in Asia, Ireland etc.
So there is a small market niche for aussie made stuff.

I'm in the process setting up Australian Made Souvenirs.
    I have 2 domains. australianmadesouvenirs.com.au and ausmade.com.au

As I see it I don't have to compete solely on price as we will be able to offer products made on demand and with genuine local relevance,
    End of advert.

We're not the only ones with that problem. I went shopping in Brooklyn NY to buy my daughter an electric kettle. They were all chinese.
Went to the Empire State building and all the souvenirs were chinese and the quality was about the same as a lot of the rubbish imported here. I checked through a box of fridge magnet thermometres and every one had a different temperature on it.
The yanks don't seem to have any clothing industry left either.

Good luck with the aussie made souvenirs. Every country should make it's own souvenirs.

One issue is that a lot of Australians don't want to pay a high price for high quality products so we import low quality, cheap goods from overseas for the domestic market and the high quality, high price stuff that we make here gets exported overseas to bigger, more lucrative markets.

    Thumbs up

Yep P&N Woodturning chisels are as good, if not better, than any other brand on the market. Even if they are not as shiny.
So all you woodies out there get behind the Aussie manufacturers!

A little easy to take a shot at Triton but they are a homegrown success story, and got many on these forums (me included) into woodworking.

Remember back in the early days when we'd come down to the big smoke, & us kids would stand with Dad for 10 or 15 mins watching the triton video in McEwens.
