I bought a Taiwanese Saw !!!
Apologies to Peter Mikk, but I just went and spent a couple of grand on a Jet Cabinet Saw and blow me down, but it's made in Taiwan ! Just for good measure, I bought a Jet Dust Collector, and surprise, surprise....it's made in Taiwan too.
Now I have had my fun with you Peter, I must tell you that I am very happy with both items, and the saw came out of the crate looking and working great. Arbor runout is 8 thousandths of an inch and the blade and mitre slot are within 36 thousandths of an inch to parallel. (Hope these aren't Taiwanese inches )
I have attached a picture in case you would like one for your album Peter.Last edited by ubeaut; 23rd April 2003 at 08:43 PM.

That is one nice looking saw. It appears to have a saw guard and a riving knife attached, and about a 100mm dust collection port. I imagine that it will do everything that you wish it to.
I envy you - today I hauled my Mk3 Triton out of my toolshed and set it up under the carport. I assembled the extension table, levelled everything, then set up the dust extraction system which is a Godfreys reconditioned vacuum cleaner (with all bags and filters removed) that attaches to my Triton collector. It took me 20 minutes to set it all up, and another 20 minutes to reduce the 3mm MDF boards that my wife paints on to the size that she requires. It then took me another 20 minutes to strip everything down, vacuum the mdf dust off it, and wheel it back into the shed. I then spent the rest of the day priming the boards with acrylic paint for her ladyship.
Some time in the next few days I will haul the saw table out again, together with my Triton router table, and reduce some recycled floor boards to mouldings suitable for pictiure frames
What is the point of this? My ancient Triton does exactly what I need, and fits into the space that I have. I'm happy with it. I would love a nice combo machine or a panel saw, but my wife's car has priority under the carport, and I can't see myself wheeling a Jet or Woodcraft tablesaw into and out of the toolshed. It's horses for courses. I've had my Triton gear for close to twenty years and, as I have no desire to move house, can't see my workshop getting any better.
I have a 12" Delta planer - great for getting recycled floorboards down to picture frame size. I have a CarbaTec 1hp extractor that handles the chips from the planer perfectly. What else can i ask for?Growing old disgracefully...

Ken, I curios. Did you look at the new Jet Supersaw? I believe it was introduced to compete with a similar looking saw from Dewalt, and could be described as a hybrid contractor/bench saw. It has a sliding extension table, sold as an extra in the USA, but only available here with this feature.
If you looked at this model, I would be interested to know why you eliminated it from consideration.

Yes I did look at the supersaw, but an additional $400 plus a 6 week wait swayed me. It looks like a nice saw though.

congratulations ken
i know the feeling of purchasing new machines,
and all i was saying with my original coment was for poeple to be aware of all available alternatives, woodworking machines like computers are a tool, and as long as they do the jog they were purchased for (and sometimes pushed further than they were designed for) then you have made the right decision. I am not anti taiwanese as i do have a couple myself.

Nice unit Ken, I'm envious. Jet ensure that all their stuff is made to strict quality controls so I am sure you have made a good choice.

My initial response was emotional because I lived in Taiwan for several years, and my wife is Taiwanese, so I have a fairly good understanding of their culture. I was also a buyer in Taiwan so I have visited many factories and seen how well they can do things.
Anyway, my subsequent posts were only directed to you in fun - no offence intended.
