Brad nailer and Compressor combo
Hi all,
In the next few months I'm going to look at building some workshop cabinets, then hopefully followed by building a new kitchen in my house. I'm considering getting a brad nailer and compressor not only for the cabinets, but for jig making, skirting etc.
Are there any major things I should be looking at when buying a compressor or brad gun and can anyone recommend brands/models for the nailer and compressor? I'm hoping to come across a package deal, but I'm not ruling out a second hand unit if something decent comes up.
Cheers
Andy

Hi Andy
You definitely get what you pay for with compressors, I have a Clisby which is over 20 years old and I've only ever replaced the run condenser which cost $20, but it depends on how often you will use it and if it's only going to be periodic you might find that a cheap one does all you need and will give a good service life.
As far as a bradder goes you should consider Tool King in the US, they sell reco DeWalt and Bostitch guns at fantastic prices, I bought a 15 gauge Bostitch fixing gun there a few years ago landed on my doorstep for $180.00, local new price was just over $500 at the time, I've used it on an almost daily basis and haven't had a problem with it.
They have bradders for about $60 US and you will pay about the same in postage, you may also want to consider a stapler for your cabinets.

Andy, I have a cheap bradder that does a pretty good job. Can't remember but possibly Supercheap Auto.
I have a generic 40L 2HP compressor that wasn't too expensive but has worked well for about 10 years now.
I have been thinking about upgrading to something decent and I have seen good reviews for the Hitachi Bradders
SYDNEY TOOLS - Hitachi C1 Series Brad Nailer This one in particular. Has a 5 yr warranty.
The American magazines do a nail gun review every now and then. You can usually find them online somewhere. Those were the droids I was looking for.

Thanks for the replies.
I'll have the check out Tool King and see what they have to offer.
Tony - I was looking at the super cheap compressors a little while ago. I'm not going to be using it every day, so this may be the way to go for the compressor, then something like the Hitachi or Bostitch for the brad nailer.

G'Day Andy.
I too have an old Clisby Compressor [20yrs]; "V" Twin, belt drive but with only a 2HP motor which gives me a consistent 8cfm.
AIR COMPRESSORS
Can I encourage you to steer clear of the cheaper chineses compressor; especially if the claim more that 3-4CFM per horsepower of motor.
I also have a Bostitch Nailer/Stapler plus a Toolex Nailer [Twain].
You're welcome to have a look & play if you have time as part of the investigation prior to your purchase.
Cheers, crowie
