    Default Broken guard on SCMS

    Hello,
I'm just wondering if anyone has replaced a broken guard on their SCMS?
I managed to knock the plastic retracting part into the still-spinning blade with the end of a paling on the weekend. The guard disintergrated, bits of brittle plastic all over the yard!
Its a cheapie Ryobi, and not sure about availability of parts yet, any suggestions? If the guard is any more than $100 I reckon I'll buy a new saw!

    Cheers,
    Andy Mac

    Andy,

Have you tried the customer service section on here http://ryobi.com.au/ ?

    Cheers.

Yep been there done that. I just went into my local Mitre 10 and they ordered a new one in for me from Ryobi. From memory (and it was over 2 years ago) it cost something like $20.

That flimsy bit of plastic is better than flimsy little fingers. To think I just tossed out a burnt out SCMS and could have saved the guard for anyone with the same type. If you are lucky someone on the forum might have one lying around in the "might come in handy one day" pile.

I can't help but wonder if, in a worst case scenario, it's possible to make a replacement from [gasp] thin-sheet MDF or perhaps some perspex?

Far from the perfect solution, but at least it'd help keep the pinkies attached & ythe SCMS in usable state...
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.

    Thumbs up

Quick update, in a little over a week Bunnings had me the spare part for $23, which I paid up-front. It came bare, so lucky I retained the spring and screws etc from the wreckage of the original.

I busted mine again today.

One day I'll have an SCMS with a blade brake.

    Craigb,
What brand is the saw, I have a used SCMS guard and bits sitting in by shed that I cannot use since the saw died, it was for a GMC 250mm SCMS.
    You are welcome to it.

    Thanks for the offer Felixe.

It's a Ryobi so I doubt if the GMC would fit. It only costs about $20 to replace it's more of an annoyance than anything. Especially as I've done it once before.

    Cheers

    Cheers,
I'd call that pretty reasonable service and not too exy - even for a bit of flimsy plastic. Much better than mangled pink bits
