Budget SCMS
Hi there. Have been reading up on the forum stuff re budget sliding compound mitre saws, in particular the ryobi and gmc but the most recent discussions were last year. In that time ryobi have updated their model and I'm wondering if anyone has any recent feedback to offer.
Both gmc and ryobi now have the laser guide, without looking at it I'm thinking they might be made in the same factory as a lot of these things tend to be. I'd love a makita but i can't see it happening - what do people think of these budget smcs's nowdays?

I cant really tell you yet how the GMC one performs but definately stay away from the Ryobi if you are going for the laser guided saw. The Ryobis mitre guide is a sticker which was not attached properly in the factory and at present all are like that. I waited 4 months for ryobi to sort the matter out and in the end bought the GMC as the guide is actually moulded as part of the base.

I've got the GMC SCMS - it is pretty good. It is not a surgical instrument by any stretch and it shrieks like a banshee with it's hair in a thicknesser but it works pretty good.

Answering my own question
Well, on saturday I attended a sale at the ryobi factory at milperra (prior to recieving your response wood duck). They were selling 2nd's and reco warranty stock cheap - I mean cheap.
Picked up a ryobi SCMS, the new laser guided model for $150. Has a bit of paint missing on the base but apart from that is factory condition. Good points - square out of the box, laser guide is spot on and is actually useful, no sticking in the action like I've read about in another post. Bad points, depth and length of cut well below that of expensive saws, no ability to trench cut (ie depth of cut not variable), positive lock for angles varies a little (better to go by sight off the angle gauge). Well worth $150 but if it was a straight comparison I would have gone gmc.
Can't help bragging - also picked up the thicknesser, priced in the gasweld specials catalogue at $398 for $140 then later that night found 16 meters of oregon up the road. A nice old lady was getting a new carport and said I could have it A few runs through the thicknesser and bam, free wood baby!

Hi, yep those prices were for the saturday but they sell reco ones out of the shop whenever. I just rang the shop to enquire and a guy named ken said he's got two thicknessers there for $150 each in 2nd hand condition which he'll supply a new blade with. Might be worth a call.

BTW I'm not affiliate with ryobi just believe in sharing the luck around

sounds like a bargain, anyone bought one of the secondhand thicknessers ?
is it the current model, the AP13 I think it is ? For $150 sounds good depending on the quality.

I bought one of the second hand thicknessers today for $150. Yes it is the AP13 model. They had run out of blades though. They will ring when blades come in. Thicknesser comes with 3 months manufacturers warranty. I haven't tried it out yet. I will add another post after I have given it a good test.
Apart from a few scratches it all seems pretty good. Blades seem in good shape and sharpened. No nicks etc.
A few scratches on the outfeed table etc. Apart from that it seems in very good condition.Greg Lee
