Bunnings GMC clearance bargains
Hi all,
Thought it might be a good time for a specific thread for all the GMC runout stock appearing at Bunnings at the moment. We're probably all aware of the arguments for buying decent tools to begin with, but at these prices it's hard to resist gearing up with some of those tools you only use occasionally but which are handy to have there nevertheless.
I noticed that my local has some of the ½HP redeye pedestal drills (LDP13F) for $84 - I think these were originally $299 or something. Surely not the finest pedestal drill ever made, but it's got to be worth $84 to someone who could never justify spending $300 on one.
I'm also wondering about the scrolling pendulum jigsaws. They have the 720w "2-in-1" model (SPJ2HM) with removable handle, which looks awfully like the Triton one, for $59. They also have the 920w LS950SPJ at the same price. I don't have the need for a jigsaw very often, but the cheapie I have at the moment is shocking. While they're not the best by any stretch, These GMC's look like a pretty big step up for a very modest outlay. I'm liking the Triton-esque one BTW.
Next they have a couple of bench grinders for $29. There is a ½HP 6" model with built in worklights and magnifiers (BG612HPL) but more interesting to me is an 8" model with a ⅔HP motor but without the gadgets (BG200A).
The GMC version of a Dremel tool, the MX372 can be had for the princely sum of $14.
They also had some of the mitre saw bench/trolley things for I think $70.
There are a whole swag of other power drills, rotary hammers, sanders etc which may or may not appeal to some of us, the above are just the items that I found interesting.
BTW, don't be misled by the clearance sticker where it says "was $xxx". These only show the PREVIOUS price, and a lot of this clearance stuff has been repeatedly reduced. The original retail prices were often much higher than that.
It looks like the stores have some variations in what they are carrying, so perhaps this might be a good place to share the love and help other members find a bargain while they last?

Seen these prices at a few Bunnings, so don't think it is isolated to one or two stores.

This was Altona (Vic), but like Stu says you'll find some of the GMC clearance stuff in just about any green shed at the moment.
Does anyone (Stuart I'm looking in your direction ) have any comment to make regarding the GMC jigsaw, and in particular the apparent similarities between it and the Triton model?!
I got one of the pedestal drills and I have to say it seems pretty sturdy and I'm sure it will be accurate enough for my needs. The keyless chuck is reassuringly solid and all in all I'm very happy with it. I'm still procrastinating about the 8" bench grinder, but for $29 I should probably just grab it.

If you can get it for a good price, why not? I use a jigsaw once a year or so, so a cheap one is going to last a lifetime. I like the fact that you can remove the handle for two different operating styles.
As far as it's similarity, it's not very similar when you place them side by side - they are both jigsaws, both with similar features (removable handle, variable pendulum action). I didn't look closely enough to see if the GMC has a scrolling function (ie where you can steer the blade rather than having to twist the entire tool)
I'd guess that they are made in different factories, with different levels of quality, but again, a jigsaw is not a high precision tool, and if one was 1/2 the price of the other, I'd be tempted to save some money. If there was only a $50 difference or something, I'd go the orange one. Either way, unless you are a heavy jigsaw user, both will probably last a lifetime!
Disclaimer - I have only quickly looked at the GMC in store (for 30 seconds or so). I have (purchased by me at full price when they first came out!) a Triton Jigsaw."Clear, Ease Springs"

I saw the 2200w GMC "Platinum" router for $99 today - normal price $198. There was a display model, but none in the box otherwise I probably would have bought one..

If that is the case you should gently (or not so gently, depending on your inclination) that they are in breach of the Trade Practices Act (1974) section 53, False or Misleading Representations paragraph e "make a false or misleading representation with respect to the price of goods or services". This has a potential maximum of 10000 penalty points (defined in Part VC, Division 2).
That should put them back in their hole!

A clearance sticker on a non-discounted item is a mighty fine line! I personally would not want to be the one explaining that to the nice man (or woman) from the ACCC....

But all they are doing is clearing them out...getting rid of them. Not necessarily saying they are discounted.

It is a fine line - there are ACCC guidelines on what they can say when comparing the sale or discount price but if it's not being reduced in price mark is correct in that it's arguably still falling under the general "false and misleading" provisions ...

My 12 year old makita jigsaw went kachunka kachunka naka naka naka naka last thursday while doing a bit of work on a sanding box. Been told it could be as much as $300.00 to fix if they can still get parts for it.
I saw the GMC 2 in 1 scroll jigsaws today at vermont south bunnings for $59.00 and figured for the amount of time I use a jigsaw these days it'd do the job. Also saw the little one handed belt sander, $39.00, couldnt resist. Then I saw the triton jigsaw and thought WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!, same damn thing I had in my hand except different colour.
I asked the sales guy about the similarities, so he takes both out of the box and we have a look. Damned if either of us could see any difference in the two of them. Neither he or I could see the value in the extra $100.00 that was being asked for the orange one.
Anyway, took the sander and jigsaw home, unpacked them both and had a play. The sander feels very well balanced and is very controllable just using one hand. The dust extractor attatchment is a very loose fit but when the sucker is applied it worked a treat.
As for the jigsaw, at first glance its a big heavy thing. I do like the no tool blade change mechanism, no more trying to find that one allen key that I knew exactly where it was
The scrolling action is a nifty thing, first I've come across. Havent cut anything with it yet but from the feel of it I'd say it should do everything I will throw at it.
I've always had the so-called trade quality power tools but some of my GMC purchases have been pleasant surprises.
Anyways, just my 2 cents,
Ross.
