Ian,
just got back on Sunday after three and a bit weeks away. Before that I was working like a madman trying to build 4 kitchens at once. Consequently very little time hereabouts. Actually the only reason I've been hanging around here instead of trying to clear the backlog of work I've got is a bad case of the flu.
What's the story with the blackwood tree?

Ian,
found the log, 9 metres long or thereabouts and tapers from about 600/700 dia to about 400. Local "black wattle", most probably brown salwood but hard to tell as there's no leaves, flowers or seed pods. Spoke to the owner and it's mine for the taking. If I can shake this flu I'll collect it this weekend and post some pics.

Mick - Good-oh - Salwood not quite the windfall a good Blackwood log of that size would have been, but useful stuff. There are plenty of blackwoods around up there, (or there are up near the old home farm) but they rarely get to anything like that sort of size in my experience, so I was wondering......
Hope the flu clears soon,
Cheers,IW

Ian,
everybody call them "black wattle" hereabouts but they're usually another acacia. Still a really nice timber, dark and hard. I was told by a botanist that Acacia Melanoxylon does grow in the district, but usually in the colder and higher areas like Ravenshoe and Herberton.
