Default Can't tighten pad on Bosch GEX125

So I was sanding away this morning and the pad came off my Bosch GEX125 random orbit, I run the 150 pad on mine exclusively. So screw it back on and back to sanding I thought, but buggered if I can work out how to tighten it up.

The pad is held on by a single central bolt.

    IMG_2930.jpg

That bolt screws into a threaded bush that is presumably a press fit inside a bearing, pictures below with the bearing retaining plate removed so you can see that it is a bearing.

    IMG_2931.jpg IMG_2929.jpg

So I can start the thread OK, but the centre of the bearing spins, as bearings are supposed to do, and I have no way to lock it and stop it from spinning to tighten the bolt. I even got desperate enough to dig out the instruction booklet but that just says to tighten the bolt. What am I missing? I can not fathom how this was ever meant to work or what could be wrong that it doesn't work now. It will not self tighten when running, it unscrews itself. Any ideas?

    Cheers Andrew

Does the motor turn the right direction so that the thread will automatically tighten when running? I assume that bush you refer to is attached to the bottom of the motor shaft and the thread is offset to give the orbital action.

The bush it attached to the bearing which I believe is attached to the motor shaft, and yes it is offset for the orbital action.

The bolt doesn’t tighten when the motor is run, it unwinds itself, which also seems like a design flaw.

After looking at the photo of the diagram above and your photos it appears to me that this piece is actually broken into two, one piece still in the bearing and the other around the thread on the pad

    Hope this helps

Thanks Rick, that answers my question, exactly the info I was unable to find myself.

very disappointing, I have had the sander for a few years but I reckon it would be lucky to have done 20 hrs of work. Knew I should have bought a
    Festool from the start.

You can order online replacement parts
    GEX 125 A - 0 601 372 037 | Product Detail Page | Power Tools | After Sales Service
Just make sure you select the correct model (the one in the link is my guess)
as you can see the cost isn't great for that part

or you can take to a repairer and have them give you a quote

Thanks again Rick, unfortunately the part for my model comes as a sub assembly for $112 plus postage, that's a lot of coin if they only last 20 hrs or so, on a $290 sander.

I have a metal lathe so might have a look at what's involved in machining one myself.

    Thanks again.

    Default Bosch sander

Two weeks ago we had exactly the same problem at my local Men's shed. Our solution was to order the broken part from a spare parts dealer in UK. About $35 plus postage. i cant get the web address until tomorrow but will post it here.
    cheers.

    OK here is the solution.

Firstly the problem once disassembled, these 2 parts should be one!

    IMG_2932.jpg

At this point it seemed like the easiest solution was to bore out the flange, machine a new threaded shaft long enough to go through the flange and inside the bearing, making it a press fit. So that's what I did.

    Parts machined.

    IMG_2933.jpg

    Then pressed together

    IMG_2934.jpg

Its all reassembled and I have test run it for around 5 minutes and all seems good. Time will tell if this repair is better or worse than the original.

This sander seems to be a classic example of how the world has gone, Bosch made a pretty good sander and then cut just enough corners to meet a price point that ultimately made it a bit crap. I wouldn't rush out to buy another one.

It is Zinc plated, it could be cast steel, definitely not cast iron. Now I realize what the problem was my googling shows that this is indeed a very common fault with these sanders.
